A client came to me for one-to-one voice coaching recently. He was confused,
“I’ve been watching your YouTube videos, and have read your book a few times. But I still couldn’t seem to get the breathing right. I’m also still nervous when I gave presentations.”
Upon digging deeper with this client, I realized it was the tension in his mind followed by the tension in his body that has been stopping him from making progress. Even when he tried to breathe properly, the tension in the mind was creating tension in the body, which prevented him from breathing properly, let alone creating resonance.
Voice is vibration and it’s very susceptible to the tension in the body. Tension in the body is a reflection of what’s happening in the mind.
Watching YouTube videos and reading the book, even knowing all the techniques does not guarantee you get it. Many a time, it is your body, your mindset, your personality and many other factors that get in the way.
Working with this client on his voice was not only to work on breathing or resonance, but first and foremost, work on releasing the worries in his mind that created the tension.
After the session, he sent a message,
“I wish to take this opportunity to thank Cynthia from my heart for her patience and coaching during the coaching session. I feel that the guidance and exercises given by Cynthia were marvellous and augur well with my inspiration to become a better and confident speaker.”
If you want to work on your voice, don’t stop at the voice techniques level. Look beyond.
