Most people think to command attention you need to have a louder voice, or speak fast, or vary your tone of voice.
The truth is, none of the above works. More importantly, you don’t command attention, you attract attention.
First, you must understand, what makes people pay attention and what keeps their attention?
Are you curious to know? Good. Because the secret to attracting attention and speaking with impact is, pique their curiosity.
When they are curious about what you are going to say, you have their attention.
How do you pique their curiosity?
When I talk about the 3-step process to develop your voice, instead of telling my audience, “Now, the 3rd step is blah blah blah.” I would say:
If you master the 3rd step, your voice will sound deeper and fuller.
If you master the 3rd step, people will find your voice sound confident and credible.
If you master the 3rd step,
“What’s the 3rd step?” Before I even finished, some audience members couldn’t wait already.
So, the next time when you want to introduce an idea, don’t tell them what it is. Pique their curiosity and make them want you to tell them. You will speak with much more impact.
