Are you living a life that is always in a rush, juggling from doing one thing to another or trying to do as many things as possible?
When one of my clients was trying to squeeze a deep breathing session into lunch time, I smiled, “It won’t work well as breathing and voice requires you in a calm and relaxed state.” It is indeed because of the fact that he’s always in a rush that his body system, especially his respiratory system is failing him.
We live in a fast-paced environment. We want everything to be done as soon as possible. That’s where all the stresses start and come in. Stress is one of the number one killers to our health. Do you have time to take a brief break, or simply pause to take a deep breath?
One deep breath will suffice to calm you down and bring balance to your nervous system. By deep breathing, I mean to breathe with the support of your diaphragm. Breathing in this manner will lead to more oxygen to your brain and eliminate toxins from your body. It is indeed your innate powerful stress-release weapon. More and more companies now hire professionals to help eliminate stresses in their employees by practicing deep breathing.
Here’s one exercise to get you started. You can do it anytime anywhere.
Stand or sit straight. Take a deep breath with your mouth slightly open. Hold the breath for a count of 5 and then exhale slowly.
Take note on the use of a slightly open mouth. Interestingly, I found that most of my clients do not like using an open mouth. For beginners, this is the most effective way to breathe with the support of your diaphragm as the air goes faster and more directly. Rest assured that you won’ become a mouth breather. This is just an exercise you practice and you don’t need to open your mouth widely. A slightly open mouth will do.
Learn to breathe with the support of your diaphragm. When you breathe deeply, everything slows down automatically. You will think well and feel energized. You’ll perform much better and handle challenges with more ease and composure.
