Great Speakers & Leaders Get Emotional

No, to be a great speaker and leader is not to ask you to get over-emotional, but to express your emotions properly and genuinely, be it in speaking or as a leader.

In business, emotions are often considered as getting in the way of achieving the results, not in control and not strong. Interestingly, we are drawn to speakers who speak with genuine emotions and leaders who mean what they say.

Emotions are critical. A speaker needs emotions to establish connections, motivate and inspire. A leader needs emotions to build trust, set a vision and make tough decisions. Without genuine emotions, everything falls flat and impact diminishes.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest speeches of our time, the speech given by Martin Luther King on 28th Aug 1963, I Have A Dream.

The soul of the speech came from Dr.King’s emotions: determination, passion, faith, anger. It was what came from within that drove the speech that left a lasting impact on people and changed the world.

The impact was created not only in one by one single emotions, but the escalation of emotions. There are 3 distinctive paragraphs where you’ll hear the escalation of emotions:

  • 11:25, where it started “I have a dream …”
  • 14:13 started the paragraph on “With this faith …”
  • 15:07 started the paragraph on “Let freedom ring …”
