Getting Your Mature Voice without Getting Old

One of the common challenges participants in our previous workshops shared is “sounding young.” It affected their professional life, especially when meeting prospects and negotiating with clients. 2 of the participants once said, “Sometimes I have to press my voice down so that I can sound more mature and credible.”

Oops, that is one of the fastest ways to create damages to your poor vocal cords! Vocal cords are the so called “Adam’s apple” and the source of our voice. When you press your voice down, or purposely lower your voice, you are adding extra pressure to your already vulnerable vocal cords, speeding up its aging process. It also affects your credibility when you try to sound credible!

A mature voice is deep and full in quality. To develop that, keep these 3 steps in mind:

1. Relax your vocal cords. To relax your vocal cords is actually to do nothing about it 🙂 i.e. not to press it, not to tighten your neck area but to let it be in its most natural state. Pressing it will only make it tight and not conducive to projecting your voice.

2. Support your voice with proper breathing. The power of your voice is from your breath. If you can breathe properly, you can project a stronger voice without much effort. Try practicing breathing in and out through an open mouth. This is the easiest and most effective way for beginners.

3. Create resonance in your voice. Resonance is the key to finding depth and fullness in your voice and giving the mature quality in your voice. As a start, breathe in deeply and breathe out with “oh” sound to grow the resonance.
