You’ve heard many people speak in this way. You probably also speak in this way. In fact, it is so common for people to speak in this way that you thought it’s a trend and it makes no harm, as one of my clients told me.
What is it?
It is your tone going up at the end of a statement, which makes a statement sound like a question, e.g.”My name is Cynthia” is a statement, when your tone goes up at the end of that statement, it becomes “My name is Cynthia?”
We mentioned in this article (as published in Strait TImes here) that your tone goes up at the end of a statement, making you sound doubtful about yourself and what you say. Whether you are giving a sales presentation, negotiating a business contract, or asserting yourself in business meetings, it makes you sound unsure and not confident, which affects your credibility and authority. That’s not the impression and effect you want to leave. The next time when you stand up and speak up, beware to state your opinions with certainty and authority.
