Nine out of ten clients told me that they are monotone in their presentations. The problem is not that we are not expressive, but that we’ve kept the emotions to ourselves in the modern society. We see expressing emotions as a sign of being weak, getting easily seen through or taken advantage of by others. The truth is, you’ll feel greater freedom and courage when you could free your emotions through freeing your voice.
We human beings once had the tradition of expressing freely with our voice. We sang, we chanted and we told stories. You may be able to recall in the movies people sing together when they work. The collective energy it created could only be felt nowadays when you sing your National Anthems with a large group.
Expressing our positive emotions and properly channeling the negative ones (through deep breathing) is a way to free your voice and the inner colorful you.
Try starting with expressing one or two words in your daily conversations, e.g. the next time when you say “It’s interesting”, feel the word “interesting”. What does it mean? How would you express “interesting”? The key is to think of something that you think it’s interesting. Visualize that when you say the word “interesting”. When you get that feeling, your eyes may become larger, eyebrows may raise a little bit, and your voice will sound much more interesting.
Voice is not just something coming out of our mouth. It is a way of releasing the held emotions, freeing your tensions and expressing the rich inner you. Feel what you say and make your voice heard.
