A client of mine Frank is a senior consultant at McKinsey & Co. He’s an introvert. When he spoke, he found his voice monotonous and uninteresting to his clients. He felt upset that he couldn’t make the impact he knew he could.
During our work together, Frank was very proactive and diligent in his practices. But he didn’t feel right in the way he practised. It turned out, when he wanted to sound interesting, he always put on a “radio voice” that was clearly not him. He felt incongruent and inauthentic.
“Go deep inward to find your own voice. Don’t try to adopt other people’s voice that you heard, or stereotype what a colorful voice sounds like.” I shared with him.
To remove monotone is not to vary your pitches, your tonalities, different volume levels or paces. If you focus on that, you’ll come across as weird, incongruent and inauthentic.
To have a colorful voice, a voice that’s expressive, filled with different shades, engages your listeners and touches your listeners on a deeper level, it is through authentic expression.
Whether you are an introvert or extrovert, you have an authentic voice inside of you. You can uncover that voice and let it reflect the depth in you and the different shades of your character.
You don’t need to, and you can’t, simply speak with a voice that doesn’t feel right. Then your whole life won’t feel right.
You will feel so liberated to speak the truth of yourself when you stay true with your inner voice, like what Frank felt,
“The voice color part was so illuminating. Now I can feel my voice is more expressive yet authentic. It has helped me establish my personal branding.”
