Video: How to have a Voice that sounds Decisive

What kind of voice sounds decisive?

Hi, this is Cynthia, your voice coach. In this video, you’ll learn 3 of the traits for a decisive voice.

In my workshop last week, one participant shared, “I’m frustrated that sometimes people jump in as I speak. To avoid that and sound decisive, I speak very fast.

To sound decisive is not to speak in rapid fire. Speaking fast appears to be rushed. People have difficulty following you. It does not help achieve any communication objective.

Meanwhile, speaking slowly does not mean you are not decisive. Have you ever noticed? All the great Zen Masters speak in a very slow pace, yet hundreds and thousands of people listen in awe.

To sound decisive is also not to speak loudly. Speaking loudly pushes people away.

  • A decisive voice is first clear.

With your mouth not opening wide enough, you don’t sound sure. There’s no decisiveness.

If you sound too soft, it also diminishes the decisiveness in your voice.

  • Second, a decisive voice is crisp.

Don’t drag on the words. If you say, “We are going to finish this by next Friday and we are not going to have delays any more.” It sounds like you haven’t finished thinking while you are speaking. Don’t let your thinking be heard. Be crisp. Say, …

  • Third, a decisive voice is firm and speaks with determination.

Say what you mean and mean what you say. If you are to say, “I’m going to take full responsibility.” You’d better mean it. Don’t say … Hoping no one hears it. Be firm and mean what you say, …

One of the starting points to develop your decisive voice is to learn to manage your breath while speaking. This has been the building block for many of my clients. They often feel running out of air or the air flow is not smooth. When you are under stress, this will add even more problems to your voice and affect you expressing your decisiveness.

If you’d like to work on your breath control and project a decisive voice, feel free to contact me. Coaching is the best way to create behavioural change and get lasting results.
